1453 - Died Constantine XI Palaeologus - the last Roman (Byzantine) emperor. Legend has it that when the Ottomans entered Constantinople, an angel saved the emperor and placed him in a cave under the Golden Gate, where he waits to be brought back to life when Constantinople will again become a Christian city. Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire falls under the authority of Muhammad II, which marked the end of the Byzantine imeprija.
